Srey Neang is involved in child labour instead of going to school
Srey Neang works in a brick factory in Cambodia, where almost 1 million child labourers can be found. Her job is extremely strenuous and low paying. She is working in these terrible conditions everyday, just to pay for her family's food. This is Srey Neang's story.
Srey Neang is only 13 years old, yet she makes 4000 bricks per day in hot, dry, backbreaking conditions. Srey Neang doesn't like to work in the brick factory because it is very tiring and difficult. She doesn't get any free time to play with her friends. Although Srey Neang works very hard to make so many bricks every single day, she only earns about $2 per day. Srey Neang's mother, Mao Net, doesn't want her and her children to be working like this, but she has no choice, otherwise they will have no food that night. Mao Net owns no land, or a house. Her and her family live next to the brick factory along with many other workers where they spend little of their time. Srey Neang has been in school up to this point, but her mother is going to have to pull Srey Neang out of school next year just to make enough money to provide food for her family. Without and education and very little money, it will be very difficult for Srey Neang to become a teacher, which is what she wants to be when she grows up. Another problem that Srey Neang faces is that as they become poorer and Srey Neang become more vulnerable, becoming a part of the sex trade is a very likely danger for her. This trade is very dangerous for young children like Srey Neang as employers are often very violent, beating, raping or sometimes killing their workers.
